About NPA

Moving Bar

The Nacogdoches Photographic Association is a group who enjoy the wonder of photography and who love to share both the fruits of their labor and their knowledge and skills with others.

NPA meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the upstairs gallery of the Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main (on the corner of Main and Church Streets).

Our programs alternate between having a speaker and having a "critique session." -- sometimes the "speaker" is a practicing professional photographer who shares their expertise on such topics as:

Using Flash
Composition
Digital Photography
Photographing Birds
Close-Up Photography
Photographing Flowers
Photographing People
Black & White Photography
Photographing Sunrises & Sunsets
Which Films to Use to Get Certain Effects

On "critique" nights, members are invited to bring five images -- slides or prints -- to the meeting. As the images are displayed, the photographer may ask for suggestions which might have improved the shot, and members are invited to tell what they like about the image, and what they think would improve it. The critiques have contributed to significant improvement of both the novices and the more experienced photographers in the club.

Every other month, a subject is announced for the Monthly Photo Subject. Members are encouraged to shoot an image fitting the subject. The images are displayed and everyone present is invited to vote for three images. The three photographers with the highest number of votes receive a small prize.

Several times each year, groups of NPA members join in field trips -- sometimes to a nearby town or community which offers unique photo opportunities -- sometimes to a nearby stream or lake or wooded area -- sometimes to areas which offer exciting opportunities to photograph wildlife or wildflowers or unusual scenics -- sometimes to a zoo -- whatever or wherever seems to offer challenging photographic opportunities.

Several times each year NPA members have the opportunity to show their works in exhibits such as our Annual Juried Gallery Exhibition; in the Nacogdoches Public Library; at the LampLite Theater; the Houston Livestock Show; and other in locations.

And, frequently NPA members are asked to participate in public service projects.

The NPA Newsletter is published monthly to help keep members informed about meetings, deadlines for entries for exhibits, the Monthly Photo Subject, field trips and other photo opportunities, and to give helpful hints for photographers.

Visitor are always welcome to our meetings on the first Tuesday.
